Finding Avon Castle

Avon Castle lies on the Dorset side of the county boundary, close to Ringwood. Older references may describe it as Hampshire, reflecting the area’s historic county rather than its present-day administration. Its Ringwood postal address can also be confusing: a post town does not establish which council serves a property.

The area takes its name from the riverside country house, now divided into apartments. Treat the building, its grounds and neighbouring homes as private residential property. This guide is an introduction to the surrounding area and public places to explore, not an invitation to enter the castle or assume public access along every stretch of riverbank.

02

Heathland at Avon Heath

Avon Heath Country Park is one of the nearby places to start an outdoor visit. Dorset Council’s park pages bring together information about exploring the heath, facilities, access and activities. Use those pages to choose an arrival point and a suitable route rather than parking in residential roads around Avon Castle.

A heathland outing rewards a different pace from a town visit: allow time to look at the landscape and follow the marked paths. Check the park’s current guidance for dogs and sensitive habitats, and read its accessibility information if your group needs a particular surface or facility. The linked operator information is the source for current arrangements.

03

Following the Castleman Trailway

The Castleman Trailway follows much of the former Southampton to Dorchester railway route between Ringwood and Poole. Dorset Council describes it as a waymarked route for walking, cycling and horse riding, linking settlements and green spaces through this part of the county. You do not need to tackle its full length to make it part of a day out.

Choose a section using the council’s overview map and check access for your intended activity. The route links with Avon Heath and Moors Valley, but a map connection does not mean every approach from a nearby house is public or suitable for all users. Plan your return as well as your outward route.

04

A wider outdoor day at Moors Valley

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is another separate destination in the surrounding area. Its official website brings together walking, cycling, family activities and practical visitor information. It can be a useful choice when different members of a group want different things from an outdoor day.

Check the activity and its location before making plans: some facilities have their own booking requirements or charges, and the country park is not part of Avon Castle’s residential estate. Use the operator’s directions and access information for arrival. For a quieter visit, start by looking at the walking options rather than assuming you need a booked attraction.

05

Ringwood for a town visit

Nearby Ringwood provides a town-centre contrast to the riverside and heathland surroundings. Its market tradition is part of the town’s identity, and the town council publishes information about markets and fairs. Follow that page for the current programme and any changes rather than relying on fixed dates copied here.

A town visit can fit around an outdoor outing, with time to explore the centre and choose somewhere to eat. Keep the two destinations clear when making arrangements: this section concerns Ringwood in Hampshire, while Avon Castle is in Dorset. Use a business’s own information for menus, reservations and access needs.

Travel, local connections and essentials

Morebus publishes local bus information for Ringwood and the wider Bournemouth and Poole area. Use the journey planner with your actual starting point and destination; a service reaching Ringwood does not necessarily stop close to your accommodation in Avon Castle. The map below helps you explore places to stay, with each property’s own details providing the final location and booking information.

St Leonards and St Ives Town Council is a useful local community contact, while Dorset Council handles wider public services for Avon Castle. Ringwood’s council information applies to the neighbouring town. For healthcare contacts use the NHS service finder with your postcode, and check the relevant authority or provider before travelling or reporting an issue.
